Description: Established in 1967, The Allendale Community For Mature Living is located on 12 suburban acres in Bergen County, N.J., with private driveway access just off of Route 17 South. Continually renovated in stages to offer the most modern amenities, it was one of the first retirement communities in the region to incorporate four fully licensed levels of residency offering a continuum of care in one location. The community includes:

The Allendale Nursing Home is a fully licensed, healthcare facility offering 24-hour skilled nursing, long-term and sub-acute care services and social, recreational and therapeutic programs to maximize residents' capabilities and enhance daily living. The community prides itself on establishing and maintaining the highest standards of care for patients in order to maximize each individual's capabilities. In addition, the residence offers hospice and palliative care in a home-like, comfortable setting.

Established as the flagship for The Allendale Community for Mature Living, The Nursing Home has been renovated in stages to keep pace with the latest treatment technologies and lifestyle demands of a new generation of older adults. Additions have included an elegant dining room, entrance lobby with seating and an indoor fountain and plantings. Upscale accommodations are available in a number of new luxury private rooms featuring designer amenities, decorative wall coverings and wood flooring.

The Rehabilitation Center at The Allendale Community opened in 2006 to bridge the care gap between acute hospital care and a patient's return home. The Center accepts Medicare and Medicaid.

The Rehabilitation Center offers sub-acute care to people of all ages who have suffered an injury or are recovering from an illness or surgical procedure. In addition to speech, occupational and physical therapy services, the Center specializes in treatments for joint replacement, orthopedic fractures, cardiac rehabilitation, post-chemotherapy, I.V. therapy and a wide range of neurological diseases. The Center's extensive therapies are proven to reduce pain, increase functional mobility and facilitate the entire recovery process.

To maximize each patient's confidence and independence, activities of daily living such as cooking and washing clothes are practiced in the Center's kitchen and laundry room. In this setting, the professional therapy staff addresses adaptive techniques that will be useful to patients upon their return home. Additionally, the team conducts a home site visit and evaluation of each patient's home prior to discharge. This unique service helps to identify areas that may require temporary adjustments that pose a fall risk.

In addition to certified and licensed speech, occupational and physical therapists and registered nurse supervisors, the healthcare team at The Rehabilitation Center includes social workers, dietitians, certified nurse aides, recreation therapy professionals and a patient-care ombudsman.

Carlton Court, a memory care neighborhood, originally opened in 1972 as an assisted living residence. In 2010, the community expanded its memory care services for residents, who now enjoy a safe and secure environment with diverse therapeutic and enrichment programs designed to help people with dementia-related conditions. Comprised of 50 rooms and suites, the residence features a circular dining room; activities center; library; and sunroom adjoining a landscaped courtyard.

Carlton Court is staffed daily 24-hours a day by a registered nurse with on-call physicians for immediate medical care if needed. Certified nurses and personal care assistants are dedicated to preserving each resident's privacy and dignity.

The Atrium Assisted Living was built in 1989 as an independent senior living community. In response to the evolving health and wellness needs of its residents and today's seniors, The Atrium became a certified assisted living residence in 2011 and currently accepts long-term care insurance and veteran's benefits. The 166 studio and one- and two-bedroom rental suites feature standard amenities, spacious living areas, ample closet space and private bathrooms with an array of designer upgrade options. Community spaces facilitate socialization in a luxurious two-story atrium and lobby, a theatre, game room, arcade, library and exercise room.

Residents have access to an on-site ‘50s-style diner, putting green, pub and lounge as well as a modern Activities Center with a Greenhouse, Internet Café and coffee bar. Services consist of daily housekeeping; linen; maintenance; restaurant-style dining; and hospitality amenities. Each residence has cable television hook-up, and utilities, except telephone, are included.

Individualized help, as needed, also is provided with daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing or grooming; nutritional counseling and meal planning; medication reminders and management; 24-hour emergency call-response system; health monitoring at an on-site health station; on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy; and C.N.A. and registered nurse supervision. Exercise programs are offered along with appointment reminders and local transportation.

The Atrium Assisted Living also offers the Senior Social Club adult day program. Introduced in 2002, the club operates weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. offering ambulatory seniors stimulating peer interaction in a comfortable, secure environment. Participants enjoy a full breakfast, nutritious lunch and may take full advantage of The Atrium's activity schedule, trips, and deluxe amenities. Respite services are available as well through the Short-Term Stay Program.

History and Philosophy: Developed in stages beginning in 1967, The Allendale Community for Mature Living pioneered modern-day eldercare and has evolved into a full-service senior housing community where residents can enjoy an individual, customized lifestyle based on their specific personal preferences and healthcare needs. The continuum of care bridges the gap between skilled nursing and subacute services as well as memory care and assisted senior living. The primary goal is to help older adults remain as active and self-sufficient as possible throughout the natural aging process by offering flexible healthcare services and a full complement of hospitality services and enrichment programming in one location. The Allendale Community has forged strong partnerships with area hospitals, including Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, Hackensack University Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y.

Key Management and Staff: More than 200 staff members at The Allendale Community for Mature Living include many long-term employees, health professionals, registered nurses, licensed therapists, social workers, dietitians, certified nurse aides and recreation and activities professionals as well as an organizational ombudsman.

Dr. Hector R. Giancarlo, M.D., F.A.C.S., Founder and President, was a prominent E.N.T. surgeon in New York City and former Chairman of Otolaryngology at the New York Eye and Ear Hospital. Acknowledged by his peers, Dr. Giancarlo is a pioneer in senior housing as The Allendale Nursing Home; The Rehabilitation Center at The Allendale Community, Carlton Court and The Atrium Assisted Living were all among the first facilities of their kind in New Jersey.
