More Than 600 Business Associates and Friends of the Inserra Family Participated in Anniversary Year Event

MAHWAH, N.J., July 1, 2016 – More than 600 business associates and friends of the Inserra family joined in the 30th Annual Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund Golf Outing, raising over $450,000 for cancer research and numerous other worthy causes. During the past 30 years, the outing has grown from a small philanthropic effort to a major fund-raising event benefiting local, regional and national charities.

“As much as the outing has changed through the years, the spirit of giving from everyone who attends and sponsors it has always remained the same,” said Lawrence Inserra, Jr., president and chairman of Inserra Supermarkets. “On behalf of my family, I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Every dollar raised goes directly to fund life-changing causes, such as innovative research aimed at finding cures for cancer and diabetes as well as to help families who are struggling.”

Each June, the annual Inserra event is held in honor of the late Carl Inserra, the brother of Lawrence Inserra, Jr. “The support that Carl received from our family, friends and associates during his courageous two-year battle with leukemia became the inspiration for us to establish this occasion to help others in his memory,” Inserra noted. Based in Mahwah, Inserra Supermarkets owns and operates 22 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and New York.

Evening Celebration Features Retrospective Video, Announcement of New Fundraising Initiative and Surprise Giveaway

Under a bright blue sky, attendees played a round of golf at one of four local country club courses – Edgewood, White Beeches, Knickerbocker or Hackensack – and came together for the evening cocktail reception and awards dinner at Seasons in Washington Township, N.J. Dave Wolf, Inserra Supermarkets associate and family friend, who has attended the outing every year since its inception, served as the master of ceremonies. Festivities included a raffle with dozens of prizes, ranging from oversized flat-screen televisions to golf clubs and bags to gift baskets. In addition, Lawrence Inserra, Jr. surprised – and delighted – the group by giving away a 2016 Ford Mustang to one lucky raffle ticket holder.

During the dinner, Carl Inserra, Jr. announced the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund’s new partnership with Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center to raise funding for its innovative immunotherapy research. “The mere thought of my future children living in an age where cancer is no longer humanity’s one health concern is simply overpowering,” he said. “With the groundbreaking research of organizations like the Abramson Cancer Center, that day is within our reach.”

In addition, attendees enjoyed a retrospective video on the outing, which included family members remembering Carl Inserra’s love of life and family and discussing the event’s wide-ranging outreach through the years. The video also featured a number of long-time friends and supporters of the outing, including Robert Garrett, president and CEO of Hackensack University Health Network, reflecting on the Inserra family’s legacy of giving.

“The generosity of the Inserra family helps a countless number of people each and every day,” said Garrett. “The Inserras are always there for the big things and the little things too. I can’t thank them enough for what they do for our hospital.”

Widespread Support from Business Community

The 30th anniversary event received widespread support from a range of well-known companies that have a culture of giving back. The lead gold sponsor was the 125-year-old Schmidt Baking Company, which is one of the largest independent bakeries in America and a long-time friend and purveyor of Inserra Supermarkets. Silver sponsors included Bimbo Bakeries, Century 21 Construction & Lodi Market, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), Herr Foods and Lakeland Bank. In addition, over 20 local and national companies served as bronze-level sponsors and seven more were hole-in-one sponsors.

Over the last three decades, the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund has donated more than $3 million to nonprofits, placing an emphasis on medical organizations, including cancer research facilities; charities that ease the financial burden of patients and families; food pantries and shelters; and organizations dedicated to helping members of the military and their families. Over the years, charities have included the HUMC Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, the MS Center at Holy Name Hospital, Tomorrows Children’s Fund, Table to Table and the foundation of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where Carl Inserra received treatment.
