Commemorative Event is Oldest and Largest Observance of its Kind in New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J., April 10, 2015 – Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Holocaust Remembrance Committee and The Berger Organization LLC will host the City of Newark’s 28th Annual Holocaust Remembrance on Thurs., April 23, at 11:30 a.m. at the Best Western Robert Treat Hotel, located at 50 Park Place in the City’s downtown.

This year’s keynote speaker is Robert Max, a Jewish American soldier who served in the U.S. Army’s 6th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge. Max was captured by the Nazi Waffen-SS during the battle and forced to work as a slave laborer. His experience speaks both to the heroism of the American troops who liberated Europe and the Nazi concentration camps 70 years ago, and to the resilience of Hitler’s Jewish prisoners. In recent years, Max began speaking publicly to share his wartime experiences.

The 2015 observance once again will be attended by Newark Public, Charter, and Parochial school students studying the Holocaust as part of their curriculum. The event also will feature musical performances by the Arts High School choir.

Event sponsors include Holocaust Council of MetroWest, the City of Newark’s Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services, the Newark Public Schools, The Berger Organization LLC, The Betesh Group, Edison Properties LLC, RBH Group LLC, IDT, and Manischewitz.

Now in its third decade, the City of Newark’s Annual Holocaust Remembrance is the state’s largest and oldest observance of its kind. Each year the observance focuses on memorializing victims of the Holocaust, and emphasizing the importance of remembering the past for the sake of the future.
