Oxford Enhanced Senior Living Residents Find Second Love at Independent Living Community

LANGHORNE, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2023) – Oxford Enhanced Senior Living residents Alberta Hess and Bernie Rice were each married for 70 years – to the first loves of their lives. Now, they say, they have been lucky enough to find love again and it’s just as wonderful the second time around.
Bernie lived on Singer Island in Florida before moving to Oxford’s independent living community in Langhorne, 14 years ago. Alberta moved in from her home in Newton, Pa., a decade before him. They kept seeing each other at events, but it wasn’t until they officially met during the community’s Christmas tree lighting in 2021 that they felt a spark between them.
“We kept seeing each other at activities but never really met,” Bernie said, noting after a glass of wine and plenty of conversation, they shared their first kiss. “Bells started ringing for both of us and they haven’t stopped yet.”
And, the rest, as they say, is history. A year after sharing that first embrace under the glowing Christmas tree, Alberta and Bernie exchanged promise rings in December 2022. They promised to keep the magic alive and care for each other for the rest of their days.
Before moving to Oxford, Bernie was married for 72 years and has nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Alberta was married for 70 years and has nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
“We love to dance to the music of Dean Martin and Glenn Miller,” Alberta said. “We also like to play Rummikub and eat our meals together.”
Both Oxford Independent Living residents enjoy spending their days together shopping and participating in activities at the community including exercise classes, Continue to Learn courses, Drama Group, worship services and more.
Their advice for other couples? “Never stop telling the one you care for that you love them,” Alberta said.
