30th Annual Event in June Has Expanded Support to Benefit Local and National Charities

MAHWAH, N.J., May 31, 2016 – In the past 30 years, the Annual Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund Golf Outing has grown from a small philanthropic effort to a major fund-raising event benefitting local, regional and national charities. This year, in honor of the outing’s 30th anniversary, Inserra Supermarkets is expanding its outreach to further grow the event.

“We have involved many companies, friends and partners who are helping Inserra with major sponsorships this year,” noted Ron Onorato, president and COO of Inserra Supermarkets. “We are thankful for their generosity as we continue our commitment to this important event.”  Based in Mahwah, Inserra Supermarkets owns and operates 22 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and New York.

Sponsors are Well-Known Companies with a Culture of Giving

The lead gold sponsor for the 30th anniversary event is the 125-year old Schmidt Baking Company. It is one of the largest independent bakeries in America and a long-time friend and purveyor of Inserra Supermarkets. “We take pride in being a company that practices the highest standards of corporate citizenship and social responsibility, making it a priority to engage with and support local organizations, projects and initiatives that make a difference,” said Jeff Sobotta, general sales manager of Schmidt Baking Company.

Silver sponsors include Century 21 Construction, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), Herr Foods (Herr’s) and Lakeland Bank. A full-service construction company, Century 21 provides aid to a number of local and national charities. Those often include shelters and medical charities focused on pediatric care. HUMC, an award-winning teaching and research hospital, is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in New Jersey. The Inserra family has long partnered with HUMC to support the nonprofit’s innovative care and supportive services, particularly to help young patients undergoing treatment for cancer as well as their families.

Herr’s is a leader in the snack food industry. Through its charitable giving initiatives, the family-owned company strives to provide for those in need and support those working to improve their communities. At Lakeland Bank, giving back to the neighborhoods it serves is an important core value. It operates 53 New Jersey branch offices in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties.

In addition, 21 companies have become bronze sponsors. They include:

A Legacy Event in Honor of Carl Inserra

Each June, the annual Inserra event is held in honor of the late Carl Inserra, the brother of Lawrence Inserra, Jr., who is the chairman and CEO of Inserra Supermarkets. “The support that Carl received from our family, friends and associates during his courageous two-year battle with leukemia became the inspiration for us to establish this occasion to help others in his memory,” Inserra noted.

The event has grown based on relationships and a caring philosophy that characterizes Inserra Supermarkets and its sponsor companies. From its first gathering with just about 30 golfers, the outing has evolved into a highly-anticipated annual event for hundreds of associates, friends and members of the Inserra family. Over the years, the event grew to include two golf courses then three and four. In 2015, over 600 people attended the event, which raised more than $325,000.

This year, on June 13, attendees will play a round of golf at one of four local courses – Edgewood, White Beeches, Knickerbocker or Hackensack. An evening reception at Seasons in Washington Township, N.J. will follow.

Charities Range from Medical Centers and Research Facilities to Food Pantries

Over the last three decades, the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund has donated more than $3 million to nonprofits, placing an emphasis on medical organizations, including cancer research facilities, and charities that ease the financial burden of patients and families. In addition, the fund provides critical support to food pantries and shelters as well as to organizations dedicated to helping members of the military and their families.

Through the years, charities have included the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, the MS Center at Holy Name Hospital, Tomorrows Children’s Fund, Table to Table and the foundation of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where Carl Inserra received treatment.

In 2016, the outing will benefit a range of nonprofit organizations, including Tackle Kids Cancer, a program of the Children’s Cancer Institute of Hackensack University Medical Center. Tackle Kids Cancer is focused on providing clinical care, unique support services and groundbreaking research needed to find a cure.

“We can think of no better way to honor Carl’s memory than to provide aid to others at times when they often need it most,” said Inserra. “Our business associates are an integral part of the Inserra Supermarkets family, and we are so grateful for their outpouring of support.”

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, please call Allison Sargent Events at 973-783-5689 or visit
