Specialized Respiratory Care Unit at Richmond SNF is Region’s First of its Kind

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 18, 2024) Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Richmond recently celebrated the grand opening of its new, highly specialized Ventilator Unit. The skilled nursing facility’s 18-bed, in-facility suite is geared to treat patients who are ventilator and tracheostomy dependent, or have debilitating respiratory conditions. It is the first of its kind in the Richmond area.

Under the leadership of board-certified pulmonologist Omair Tahir, MD, and Quyen Duong, the center’s director of respiratory care, Canterbury’s Ventilator Unit provides 24/7 respiratory therapy coverage. It is optimal for vent weaning and management.

“Canterbury is the only skilled nursing facility in Richmond that can take ventilator patients right off the acute care setting – it’s transformative care,” said Megan Shilling, regional director of market development for Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports the center. “The Canterbury team is thrilled to have Dr. Tahir oversee the in-facility initiative. He is working closely with Quyen and the dedicated vent team to provide for the best possible outcome for each patient.

Dr. Tahir is widely respected for his medical expertise. He is affiliated with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and the M Medical Group.

“Our vision to provide this next level of ventilator care is now a reality, thanks to the hard work of our facility’s staff, particularly our pulmonary leadership and care team, and the support of Marquis,” said Canterbury’s Nichelle Williams, administrator, during the celebratory event. “We are so grateful for everyone’s efforts.”

Canterbury’s Vent Unit is one of the centerpieces of the facility’s in-progress, multi-million-dollar modernization. The current phase also features a state-of-the-art, in-facility dialysis unit that is set to open in spring 2024. Already, the renovation has incorporated an expanded, 2,270-square-foot therapy gym with a spacious activities of daily living (ADL) suite.

Located at 1776 Cambridge Drive, the 190-bed Henrico County skilled nursing facility provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.
