SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., Nov. 12, 2014 – Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI) will continue its film series and Shabbat Scholar and Suppers with two year-end events, both part of TSTI's continuing initiative to bring scholarly programs and Shabbat spirit to both its members and the South Orange area community.

  • Sun., Nov. 23, 7 p.m.: Film Series: "Late Summer Blues." Considered one of the most important films ever to come out of Israel, this is the story of twelfth graders about to be drafted into the army during Israel's War of Attrition in 1970, who ponder the meaning of Zionism and the future State of Israel. Directed by Renen Schorr, who would later help establish the Jerusalem Film School. An interactive discussion will follow, moderated by Dr. Eric Goldman, founder and president of Ergo Media and a film reviewer for The Jewish Standard. Free for TSTI members, $5.00 for non-members. RSVP to Tracy Horwitz, thorwitz@tstinj.org.
  • Fri., Dec. 12, 6 p.m.: "Evolving Dharma" with Dr. Jay Michaelson. TSTI's Friday evening worship service will feature a Shabbat Scholar and Supper program with author Dr. Jay Michaelson, who will address the topic, "Evolving Dharma: Meditation and Enlightenment in Jewish Context." A Shabbat dinner immediately follows the service, during which Dr. Michaelson will continue his discussion. All are welcome to attend the service at no charge; dinner tickets are $25 per member, $36 per non-member. Registration and payment are due by Dec. 5; RSVP to Tracy Horwitz, thorwitz@tstinj.org or by calling (973) 763-4116.

Dr. Michaelson is the author of five books including Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment and Everything is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism. He has been included on the Forward 50 list of influential American Jews and The Advocate's list of leading LGBT religious leaders. Dr. Michaelson holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Thought from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and B.A. from Columbia, as well as a nondenominational rabbinic ordination.
