Since its Inception, Fund Has Raised More Than $3 Million to Benefit Charities Large and Small Throughout U.S.

MAHWAH, N.J., April 15, 2016 – On Monday, June 13, Inserra Supermarkets will host the 30th Annual Golf Outing for the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund. Since the fund’s inception, it has donated more than $3 million to charities large and small throughout the U.S. Each year, donations are earmarked for medical organizations as well as a range of charities based on the suggestions and needs of associates of Inserra Supermarkets and its business partners.

The annual event is held in honor of the late Carl Inserra, who passed away in 1987. He is the brother of Lawrence Inserra, Jr., chairman and CEO of Inserra Supermarkets; Marie Inserra; and Laura Dupont; and father of Carl, Jr. The family-owned grocery chain owns and operates 22 ShopRites in New Jersey and New York and is well-known for its legacy of outreach and giving back to communities.

“Carl lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment,” said Lawrence Inserra, Jr. “His greatest joy was the birth of his son, Carl Jr. Unfortunately, after a two year courageous battle with leukemia and two bone marrow transplants in Seattle, Washington, Carl succumbed to this dreaded disease. Carl’s love for life and the support he received from his family, friends and associates gave us the inspiration to begin this fundraising event to benefit others in his memory.”

At this year’s outing, attendees will play a round of golf at one of four local courses – Edgewood, White Beeches, Knickerbocker and Hackensack. An evening reception will follow at Seasons in Washington Township. Last year, more than 700 friends, family members and business associates attended the event, which raised over $325,000.
“We couldn’t have imagined how this event would evolve,” said Inserra. “My brother was with us at the first golf outing, and we were joined by 30 or so friends, family members and business associates. As the event grew, we went to two courses then three and four. The outpouring of support has been nothing short of tremendous, enabling the fund’s contributions to touch the lives of so many.”

Fund Places Emphasis on Medical Organizations and Charities Easing Financial Burden of Patients and Families

Each year, the fund allocates donations to medical organizations and facilities for research, education and equipment as well as to ease the financial burden of patients and their families. For example, the fund regularly donates to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Foundation. Located in Seattle, Washington, the Hutchinson Center is known for its team of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians working together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. In 2015, the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund also made donations to the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, the MS Center at Holy Name Hospital, Tomorrows Children’s Fund, Make-a-Wish and many others.

In 2016, the fund also plans to contribute to Tackle Kids Cancer, a program of the Children’s Cancer Institute of Hackensack University Medical Center. Tackle Kids Cancer benefits the essential clinical care, unique support services and groundbreaking cancer research needed to find a cure.

Established in 1954 by Patsy Inserra as a privately-held family business, Inserra Supermarkets remains true to its roots as a family-owned grocery chain committed to serving families and children. The company is known as a good corporate citizen, dedicated to improving the communities it serves and beyond.
