Philadelphia Skilled Nursing Facility Responding to Area Demand
PHILADELPHIA, March 24, 2021 – Kearsley Rehabilitation & Nursing Center’s introduction of a new chronic kidney disease (CKD) management program – with onsite hemodialysis – and expanded subacute care capacity reflect the skilled nursing facility’s focus on providing advanced clinical healthcare options for area residents. Located in West Philadelphia, Kearsley offers post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.
“Kearsley’s new CKD initiative and added capacity are in direct response to regional demand,” said Danielle Koons, regional director of market development for Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports the 96-bed facility. Kearsley maintains a five-star rating in quality measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Kearsley’s CKD management program provides specialized care and services to patients with CKD and related diagnoses, aiming to preserve kidney function and prevent further decline through a balance of treatment and education. This includes protocols to reduce symptoms, decrease disability, increase quality of life and promote independence.
The facility’s onsite hemodialysis operates in partnership with Dialyze Direct, a leading dialysis provider for the geriatric community. Rather than the traditional three times a week dialysis model, Dialyze Direct’s innovative approach includes shorter dialysis treatments five times a week to more closely mimic the function of healthy kidneys and reduce recovery time. Kearsley’s customized dialysis den includes six chairs, enabling the facility to handle 12 dialysis patients throughout the day in a comfortable environment.
“Patients often experience a significant improvement in their quality of life with the shorter, gentler treatments and can more easily participate in their rehab programming, too,” noted Koons. “It can be a real game changer for patients and their families.”
Wide-ranging program benefits include onsite consults under the direction of cardiologists Dr. Christopher Droogan and Dr. Steven Domsky, who lead Kearsley’s cardiac rehab services; health coaching and dietary education; routine medical management of associated co-morbidities; and case management services, among other services and therapies. Kearsley’s clinical care team also includes a full-time, onsite respiratory therapist Elaine Espinola to assist CKD patients with pulmonary co-morbidities.
12-bed Subacute Rehab Expansion
Kearsley’s expanded subacute care capacity includes the addition of 12 new subacute rehab beds. The semi-private accommodations bring the facility’s total capacity from 84 to 96 beds.
Subacute represents a comprehensive, high level of care for patients with active illnesses, injuries or complex medical conditions following – or as an alternative to – a hospital stay. Some of the most common conditions of those in subacute rehab include joint fractures or replacements, heart issues and diabetes. Subacute patients typically undergo rehab therapy sessions for one or two hours per day, as prescribed. Kearsley boasts an expansive state-of-the-art rehab gym with skilled physical therapists utilizing the latest technologies.
Kearsley continues in its development of new specialty programming and is committed to serving as a healthcare resource for area residents. Together with Marquis, it has established a resource library of physician-curated content, addressing many topics of interest for families of patients and the larger community.
