Top Nephrologist Heading Initiative at Catonsville, Md., Skilled Nursing Facility
CATONSVILLE, Md., April 15, 2021 – Meadow Park Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center has launched a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management Program with onsite hemodialysis, naming board-certified nephrologist Dr. Kamal Sewaralthahab as its director. The specialty initiative at the 120-bed skilled nursing facility in Catonsville is designed to meet the healthcare needs of area residents.
Meadow Park’s new CKD management program provides specialized care and services to patients with CKD and related diagnoses, aiming to preserve kidney function and prevent further decline through a balance of treatment and education. This includes protocols to reduce symptoms, decrease disability, increase quality of life and promote independence. In addition to consults with Dr. Sewaralthahab and other board-certified specialists, Meadow Park’s CKD program features include diabetic management, health coaching and dietary education, and routine medical management of associated co-morbidities, among other services and therapies.
A key component of the CKD management offering, Meadow Park’s recently opened onsite hemodialysis den operates in partnership with Dialyze Direct, a leading dialysis provider for the geriatric community. Rather than the traditional three times a week dialysis model, Dialyze Direct’s innovative approach includes shorter dialysis treatments five times a week to more closely mimic the function of healthy kidneys and reduce recovery time. Patients often experience a notable improvement in their quality of life with these shorter, gentler treatments. Meadow Park’s customized dialysis den includes six chairs, enabling the facility to handle 12 dialysis patients throughout the day in a comfortable environment.
“This new program fulfills a distinct need in the Catonsville area,” noted Nikki Gachot, regional director of market development at Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports Meadow Park. “Dr. Sewaralthahab is highly- steemed for his expertise in nephrology and has a specialty in CKD and ESRD management in the subacute and long-term care setting. Dr. Sewaralthahab graduated with high honors from King Saud University, College of Medicine. He completed his nephrology and hypertension fellowship at Boston University, Boston Medical Center, and his residency in internal medicine and a postdoctoral research fellowship at Tufts University, St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Previously, Dr. Sewaralthahab served as the director of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Maryland Medical First. He currently leads multiple renal programs in the Baltimore Metro area tasked with management and prevention of progression of chronic kidney disease, particularly in patients with renal disease due to diabetes (diabetic nephropathy) and hypertension (hypertensive nephrosclerosis).
Located at 1525 N Rolling Road, Meadow Park Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.
