WEST ORANGE, N.J., June 10, 2013 – The proposed ARC tunnel project under the Hudson River was designed to increase cross-river capacity, but its cancellation last year due to cost issues put that effort on hold. Now, however, Amtrak’s Gateway Program has emerged as a new proposal to complete that goal, and it has major implications for the region’s economy. The Gateway Program will be the topic of discussion at NAIOP New Jersey’s Chapter Lunch Meeting, slated for Tuesday, June 18, at Mayfair Farms in West Orange.
Bob LaCroix, Amtrak’s corridor development chief, will present an in-depth report on the Gateway Program, a proposed series of strategic rail infrastructure improvements that are designed to improve current services and create new capacity to double the volume of passenger trains running under the Hudson. It would increase track, tunnel, bridge and station capacity to create four mainline tracks between Newark and New York’s Penn Station, including two new Hudson River tunnels.
The Gateway Program, which would also benefit and support New Jersey Transit’s rail operations, similarly includes proposals to modernize the existing rail infrastructure. The result is expected to boost economic growth for those communities and properties situated along the Northeast corridor.
