Panelists Provide Insights on Energy-Efficient Retrofitting, Low-Carbon Concrete and Public Funding

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. (April 18, 2024) Making informed business decisions on energy remains a top-of-mind issue for the commercial real estate industry, and understanding and identifying construction and operational solutions early is critical. NAIOP New Jersey’s recent program, “Moving Past the Buzzwords: CRE & Sustainability,” provided a thoughtful and in-depth discussion around sustainability and how industry professionals can integrate real-work practices into their commercial real estate projects. The event was held on April 11th at Embassy Suites by Hilton Berkeley Heights.

Gregg Woodruff, PP, AICP, LEED AP BD+C, associate principal/sustainability leader at Langan, moderated the panel discussion, which addressed energy-efficient retrofitting, low-carbon concrete and the ins and outs of public funding, among other topics. Expert panelists included Chris Venezia, director of LSRP Services, ESA Environmental Consultants; Kayla Reddington, regional sustainability manager for PA/NJ, Turner Construction Company; Matthew Kaplan, LEED AP, CEO, ReVireo; and Sean Sonnemann, senior project officer – Clean Energy, Office of Economic Transformation, NJEDA.

NAIOP NJ CEO Dan Kennedy noted, “Sustainability-minded investments in commercial real estate can deliver long-term cost savings for investors and property owners. By investing smartly in sustainable systems, owners can cut costs related to energy, water, and waste removal. We are grateful to our presenters for giving NAIOP NJ members direct access to the knowledge they need to make informed investment decisions.

Technological advances are creating opportunities to change how real estate business is done. Tenant needs are evolving and changing the demands for real estate space. That change is not happening overnight. While we push back on government mandates related to decarbonization of the building and transportation sectors, we stand ready to support NAIOP NJ members in construction and repurposing options that are possible and practical.”
