Skilled Nursing Facility Team Plans Touching Celebration for Special Couple

OAKLAND, N.J., Sept. 9, 2021 — Milestone wedding anniversaries call for celebration, and that’s just what happened recently for Frank and Theresa Bednarek of Oakland. Frank is a resident at Oakland Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, and the skilled nursing facility’s care team arranged a touching ceremony in honor of the special couple’s 64th anniversary.

To the fitting tune of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Theresa Bednarek walked up “the aisle” to meet her husband under a floral trellis, as smiling staff and family members looked on. Staff decorated the room with colorful balloons and flowers, as well as a cherished wedding day photo of the couple. “The Bednareks are such dear people; it was our sincere pleasure to host a celebration for them,” said Oakland’s Cindy Blackmon, director of nursing.

Theresa Bednarek has deep ties to the area; her aunt and uncle built a home in the Borough of Oakland in the 1950s, and the Bednareks’ love story began when they met through her cousin. During their courtship, the pair regularly communicated through love letters, which remain treasured mementos today, including one dated July 15, 1955.

When asked for marriage advice, Theresa Bednarek emphasizes the importance of respect, morals and a lifetime of caring. “The best part of marriage is caring for one another through good times and bad; you persevere and make the relationship work,” she said.

Frank Bednarek served in the U.S. Naval Construction Battalions, known as the Navy Seabees; he earned his business degree and also went on to teaching after a career in business. Theresa Bednarek, a registered nurse, worked at Hackensack Hospital and also in a doctor’s office. The couple raised two children, Frank and Jennifer, and are the proud grandparents of Nick and Robert.

Through the years, the fun-loving couple has enjoyed many travels together and visiting casinos, too. For their 50th anniversary, the pair celebrated at Burgues Chateau in Wanaque, N.J., where they had held their wedding reception decades ago.

Located at 20 Breakneck Road, Oakland Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care. The facility maintains a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
