Social Seniors Live Healthier Lives, Research Shows

ALLENDALE, N.J., Feb. 19, 2014 – Living to 100 years old is no longer an uncommon occurrence. The 2010 U.S. Census logged approximately 53,000 people who were aged 100-plus, and another half-million people are projected to join those ranks by 2050. While advancements in technology and medical research, along with lifestyle choices, are helping centennials reach this milestone, the importance of keeping active and socially connected cannot be underestimated.

At The Allendale Community for Mature Living, Atrium residents Doris Jacques, Pearl Berenson, John Mazor and Adrian Nader recently celebrated their 100th birthday. Over the past year, two other residents in The Allendale Community’s 100 Plus Club celebrated a milestone birthday. Nursing Home residents Sylvia Goldsholl celebrated her 102nd birthday and Louise Guidice celebrated her 103rd. As one of Northern New Jersey’s premier continuum-of-care senior living campuses, The Allendale Community offers a variety of programs and activities that promote the physical, emotional and social well-being of its residents.

According to The University of Rochester Medical Center, people who continue to maintain close friendships and find other ways to interact socially live longer than those who become isolated. Relationships and social interactions even can help protect against illness by boosting a person’s immune system.

“Whole person wellness is not just about an individual’s body, but also one’s mind and relationships,” said Dr. Timothy Giancarlo, president of The Allendale Community. “Sustaining positive relationships with others enhances health and provides a sense of camaraderie and belonging. At The Allendale Community, we promote and encourage social activity, therefore influencing a better quality of life for years to come.”

Maintaining social interaction is just one way to age well. Even a moderate amount of physical activity is shown to help seniors by increasing muscle strength, promoting psychological well-being, and improving balance and coordination. With four distinctly separate levels of care – The Atrium Assisted Living, Carlton Court, The Allendale Nursing Home, and the Rehabilitation Center – The Allendale Community offers a wealth of opportunities for seniors to maintain their emotional and physical health.

At The Atrium, residents enjoy arts and crafts; computer classes; low-impact exercise such as Tai Chi and Zumba; shuffleboard; horseshoes; day-trips and planned social outings; and films, lectures, concerts and discussion groups. The building also has an on-site cinema, a game room, an arcade, an Internet Café, a library, an exercise room, an activities center, a 1950s-style diner and an outdoor courtyard with putting green. The Atrium’s popular Senior Social Club, an adult day program open to ambulatory local seniors, is operated weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Activities also abound at Carlton Court and The Allendale Nursing Home, where residents enjoy instrumental music and choral concerts performed by members of the community; therapeutic games and crafts to enhance motor and cognitive skills; movies and discussion groups focusing on history and the arts; and exercise classes such as Zumba and yoga.

In addition, The Allendale Community offers a Short-Term Respite and Emergency Stay Program. Originally designed to offer respite to caregivers traveling for business or a family vacation, the program has been expanded to include emergent stays during periods of severe or inclement weather.

The Allendale Community for Mature Living is located at 85 Harreton Road in Allendale (GPS: 65 Route 17 South, Ramsey).
