NEWARK, N.J., May 3, 2011 – The Berger Organization’s Best Western Robert Treat Hotel in Newark will serve as the site for more than two dozen workshops during The Newark Peace Education Summit, a three-day conference focusing on peacemaking practices from around the world and within Newark. Co-convened by Tibet House US and The Drew A. Katz Foundation, the event will take place Friday to Sunday, May 13 to 15.

The summit will be based at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC); it will feature panels and workshops with Nobel Laureates His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Shirin Ebadi and Jody Williams, and Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Somaly Mam,  and peace advocates from a wide cross section of cultures, disciplines and perspectives. The event will explore the programs, policies and methods used by communities to establish peace; why and how they work; and how to replicate them in America and around the world.

“We are honored to host this outstanding endeavor’s ‘overflow’ sessions at the Robert Treat Hotel,” said Miles Berger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Berger Organization. “Establishing and maintaining peace is a critical – and vast – priority. The powerful people and organizations that are coming together for this event are inspiring.”

Samples of the workshops to be held at the hotel include:

  • Community as a Healer
  • Person to Person giving: The New Philanthropy
  • Youths as Agents of Chang for Ending Gender Violence
  • Transformative Change In Newark
  • Peacemaking through the Arts
  • Meditation and Peace: The Effects of Group Meditation on Crime, Terrorism and International Conflicts
