RAMSEY, N.J., Sept. 9, 2014 – September, which is National Cholesterol Education Month, is a good time to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help people of all ages – from seniors to young Americans and children – prevent or manage high cholesterol. Throughout the month, ShopRite of Ramsey, an Inserra Supermarkets store, will host a wellness series led by Sondra Tackett, M.S., R.D., in-store registered dietitian. The following free events are being held for local residents. All programs are open to the public, held at ShopRite of Ramsey and do not require advance registration, unless otherwise noted:
Sat., Sept. 13 – Free Cholesterol Screening, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Knowing your numbers is a great first step toward preventing or controlling heart disease, especially since two out of three adults have high cholesterol that puts them at risk for heart disease. Learn some heart-healthy habits too. No appointments necessary.
Tues., Sept. 16 – Cooking Small Portions, 1 – 2 p.m. Wyckoff Family YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff, N.J. This dietitian-led program will provide shopping for the essential tips for active older adults who are cooking for one or two people. This session will address the benefits of varying one's diet as well as expanding one's palate while keeping shopping simple and cost-effective.
Wed., Sept. 17 – Build a Better Sandwich, 3 – 5 p.m. Get some great back-to-school lunch bag ideas and tips for how to build a creative, nutritious sandwich at the Dietitian's Corner.
Thurs., Sept. 18 – Cook Right for Tonight Culinary Workshop, 6 – 8 p.m. This hands-on cooking class will provide culinary skills instruction while preparing a three-course menu featuring tangy apple salad, pork chops with apple relish and apple-cherry crisp. Cost: $10. Pre-registration is required. Limited seats available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Fri., Sept. 19 – High Fiber Friday: Facts on Flax, noon – 2 p.m. Remain fit and full with flax, a good source of fiber. Stop by the Dietitian's Corner to taste a healthy high-fiber recipe and pick up a recipe card.
