Richmond SNF Reinforces Commitment to Progressive Skilled Nursing Care

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 26, 2023)Southampton Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Richmond in recent months has enhanced its partnerships with top regional healthcare providers to launch new, in-facility specialty care offerings and expand its clinical leadership team. Located at 7246 Forest Hills Avenue, the skilled nursing center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.

Southampton’s most recent addition is a Physiatry Services initiative, under the leadership of board-certified physiatrist Brian Dena, DO. Physiatry services – also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) services – blend pain treatments and physical therapy with the goal to help patients avoid surgery. This “whole body” approach at Southampton focuses on designing, coordinating and overseeing customized rehabilitation therapies for patients while managing their medical conditions, including co-morbidities.

Additional recently launched specialty care initiatives that support Southampton’s progressive care model include:

  • Chronic Illness Support, in partnership with Affinity Care of Virginia, integrating palliative care, pastoral support and other services with the facility’s clinical programming. The palliative care component focuses on providing expert medical care that includes emotional and spiritual support to manage chronic conditions and to help relieve symptoms and stress.
  • Pulmonary Care, which aims to reduce pulmonary symptoms, decrease disability, increase participation in physical and social activities, and promote independence and quality of life. It caters to the individual who has subacute rehab and medical needs related to an acute exacerbation or new onset of pulmonary disease.

These initiatives are being overseen by Southampton’s talented leadership, including medical director Christian Bergman, MD, CMD, who is board certified in geriatric medicine and internal medicine. The team also includes board-certified physicians Erica Carter, MD, and Michael Perini, MD; both Dr. Carter and Dr. Perini are hospitalists and affiliated with the HCA Healthcare System. Shelly Wilson, DNP, MSN-ED, BSN, RN, Southampton’s director of nursing, brings significant leadership and nursing experience to the position.

“Southampton is fortunate to have this group of highly respected physicians serving in leadership roles,” said Marquis’ Megan Shilling, regional director of market development at Marquis Health Consulting Services which supports the facility. “The entire clinical team works together seamlessly, aiming to ensure the best possible outcomes for all those in their care.”

According to Shilling, a multi-million-dollar renovation and modernization is planned for Southampton. Marquis will spearhead the head-to-toe upgrade. “The renovation will touch every part of the facility and include the expansion and modernization of its therapy gym,” noted Shilling.

Brick, N.J-based Marquis Health Consulting Services provides administrative and consulting services to skilled nursing facilities and senior housing communities along the Eastern Seaboard. The organization’s operational guidance enables its client facilities to overachieve their quality and customer service goals by embracing a progressive, multi-specialty approach to healthcare.
