Atrium Assisted Living Resident Takes on New Role at Senior Living Campus

ALLENDALE, N.J., Aug. 12, 2014 – Learle Van Emburg is known for her positive attitude, radiant personality, and enthusiasm for helping fellow residents and staff members at The Atrium at The Allendale Community for Senior Living. These attributes make Van Emburg a natural fit for her new role as The Allendale Community's first "Resident Ambassador."

As Resident Ambassador, Van Emburg will meet and greet visitors at community events, and welcome prospective residents and families to The Allendale Community. When new residents move in, she will help answer their questions and concerns, accompany them to meals in The Atrium's dining room, introduce them to others with similar interests, and help them to become familiar with the senior living campus and its amenities.

A retired psychiatric social worker, Van Emburg has been a resident of The Atrium for more than 10 years. A former Christian educator, she hosts a weekly prayer group and a Circle of Friends group and also leads memorial services. Van Emburg also enjoys sharing her extensive doll collection and spearheads the annual tree-decorating festivities. In addition, she serves as a mentor for local high school students who undertake community service projects at The Allendale Community to earn their Girl Scout Gold and Silver and Eagle Scout awards.

"I try to do something to help others every day so when I was asked to become Resident Ambassador, it was a perfect match for me," said Van Emburg. "When a new resident moves in there always is a period of adjustment. We are like one big family here, and my goal is to make every new resident feel as if they are part of our family."

At The Atrium, all residents enjoy arts and crafts; computer classes; low-impact exercise such as Tai Chi and dancercise; shuffleboard; horseshoes; day-trips and planned social outings; cooking demonstrations; films, lectures, book club meetings, concerts and discussion groups; and much more. The assisted living residence has a game room, a gym and a 24-hour movie theater. Other campus amenities include a library, a card room, a 1950s-style diner, miniature golf, a pub and lounge, a modern activities center with greenhouse, an Internet café and several well-manicured courtyards.

"Helping residents feel comfortable with their new home and lifestyle is one of our top priorities," said Dr. Timothy Giancarlo, president of The Allendale Community. "The Resident Ambassador role was designed to help new and potential residents learn more about The Allendale Community from someone who has made a similar transition.  I am thrilled to announce Learle as our first Resident Ambassador, and have no doubt she will be a tremendous resource to new and prospective residents."

Family owned and operated since 1967, The Allendale Community is located on 12 scenic acres in a quiet suburban neighborhood. The senior living and healthcare campus includes four full-service senior residences offering a continuum of care that serves residents' changing needs: The Atrium Assisted Living; Carlton Court, a memory care neighborhood; The Allendale Nursing Home; and The Rehabilitation Center at The Allendale Community.

In addition to its Senior Social Club adult day program, The Allendale Community also offers a Short-Term Stay Program. Originally designed to offer respite to caregivers traveling for business or a family vacation, the program has been expanded to include emergent stays during periods of severe or inclement weather. During a respite stay, seniors are given all the same amenities and care as permanent residents, including meals, medication management and access to a wide range of social activities.

"Even at my age, I always strive to grow and evolve as a person," concluded Van Emburg. "Each new person I meet brings something new and beautiful into my life. Hopefully, as Resident Ambassador, I can do the same for residents at The Allendale Community."

The Allendale Community for Senior Living is located at 85 Harreton Road in Allendale (GPS: 65 Route 17 South, Ramsey).
