Distinctive Offering Responds to Cultural Needs of Area Residents

FREEHOLD, N.J., Oct. 26, 2021 – The Jewish Home for Rehabilitation & Nursing in Freehold welcomes Viatcheslav Shmurak as the new liaison for its Russian Cultural Program. The 150-bed skilled nursing facility provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care; its Russian cultural offering features bilingual caregivers and medical professionals, authentic cuisine prepared in-house, special recreational activities, a Russian library, and Kartina TV.

Shmurak serves as the personal concierge for all new admissions who are Russian speaking, interfacing directly with them and their family members. He works closely with Dr. Lev Simkhayev, who oversees the cultural initiative, and The Jewish Home’s talented bilingual team to ensure that Russian-speaking residents are well understood and that all of their needs are met.

“At The Jewish Home, we have created a cultural experience with all the comforts of home for our Russian-speaking residents, and we continue to see this population grow,” said Shmurak. “The residents love the different activities, including listening to Russian music together, and usually start to sing. Their families often join in these special times, too.”

Cultural events have included Women’s Day and Victory Day celebrations. For Women’s Day, The Jewish Home followed the time-honored tradition of presenting every woman with a flower, including all residents, Russian-speaking or not, and staff. “Our Russian-speaking residents talked of treasured memories of Women’s Day and Victory Day celebrations years ago; it was wonderful to hear and see the delight on their faces,” added Shmurak.

In his new role, Shmurak is committed to building a strong relationship with the Russian community of Central Jersey, including local businesses. Born in Birobidjan in the Jewish Autonomic Region of Russia, he studied at Moscow University as a mathematician. He began visiting Lakewood in 1994 to study Talmud in Beth Medrash Govoah and remains an active member of the community.

Located at 1151 W. Main Street in Freehold, The Jewish Home includes a synagogue on premises, provides focused Jewish programming and offers OU certified Glatt Kosher cuisine. Large private rooms with showers and an expansive rehab gym highlight The Jewish Home’s concierge-driven rehabilitation experience. The facility is supported by Marquis Health Services, a highly skilled and vision-driven nursing home consulting company based in Brick, N.J.
