BORDENTOWN, N.J., May 23, 2013 – Residents at The Clare Estate, a fully licensed assisted living residence, will be holding a tie-blanket marathon to benefit children’s charities in Mercer County and overseas. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sun., June 23.

The residents of Anthony’s Walk Memory Care Unit, located within The Clare Estate, plan to use their crafting skills to make a difference in the lives of children. The blankets fashioned during the marathon will be made in various sizes and designs and donated to HomeFront, a Lawrenceville, N.J.-based organization, as well as children’s charities in Liberia and Haiti. Last fall, during the course of a four-month timeframe, the first set of 18 blankets was completed and delivered to newborns serviced by HomeFront’s Family Preservation Center in Trenton.

Each blanket has a hand-stitched fleece heart with a number inside. This represents the residents’ motto of “every heart counts” and the number signifies the chronological order in which the blankets are created. Each creation is one-of-a-kind, just like those who created it and the recipient.

The initiative, which has grown from a therapeutic activity to an outreach program, will continue to be hosted by The Clare Estate every quarter, according to Alyson Mulryne, Executive Director of The Clare Estate. In March, The Clare Estate hosted its first Tie-Blanket Marathon, during which local scout troops and volunteers worked with seniors to complete 18 more blankets in one day, bringing the total to 36. Some of the blankets are currently displayed on the community’s first-floor walkway bridge.

Established in 2001, The Clare Estate is owned by Community Investment Strategies, Inc. and housed in the former St. Clare’s Monastery, located on Crosswicks Street. The community is staffed 24 hours a day by a multi-disciplinary team, including registered and licensed practical nurses; certified medication aides and certified nurse assistants; recreation therapists; and support staff. Residents also enjoy a host of amenities, such as medication management, planned outings to local venues, housekeeping and laundry services, chef-prepared meals and on-site physician services.

Local scout troops and volunteers are encouraged to participate in the upcoming marathon. To donate funds, materials or get involved, please contact Debbie Molinelli, Memory Care Services Director at The Clare Estate, at (609) 298-9960.
