WYCKOFF, N.J., Sept. 14, 2012 – The Township of Wyckoff Planning Board will host the final public comment session on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., to hear feedback from residents about the proposed development of a ShopRite supermarket. For over 18 months, the Board has been hearing expert testimony on behalf of the applicant, Inserra Supermarkets, as well as opposing testimony from experts representing the owners of the adjacent Boulder Run shopping center and its tenant, Stop & Shop. The township’s experts also presented their own findings.

This will be the second opportunity for residents to voice their opinions before the Board votes in November on the ShopRite application. The public comment session will take place at Wyckoff Memorial Town Hall, 340 Franklin Avenue.

The current ShopRite of Wyckoff site plan, which was revised to comply with recommendations from the Township, calls for a 62,042-square-foot structure to replace a distressed building that currently occupies the site. The 53,500-square-foot building at the corner of Greenwood and Wyckoff Avenues was formerly housed by an A&P and an adjoining Walgreen’s. The property has been vacant for more than 10 years, leaving the structure and existing 431 parking spaces in a state of total disrepair.

Prior to A&P subletting the space, the long-term leaseholder, Stop & Shop, occupied the now-distressed building and left it unoccupied while it re-established operations at an adjacent shopping center. Inserra Supermarkets became the long-term ground lessee of the 7.6-acre site in 2009 and is now actively seeking redevelopment approvals.

Over the course of the application, Inserra has addressed traffic and safety concerns, architectural and landscaping improvements, drainage issues and parking regulations. Based in Mahwah, N.J., Inserra Supermarkets is one of the largest supermarket chains in the metropolitan area. Established in 1954 as a privately held family business, the company is active throughout the New Jersey and New York markets and is the owner-operator of nearby ShopRite of Ramsey.
