South Orange Synagogue’s Teen Program Incorporates Religious and Recreational Activities

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., May 28, 2014 – Members of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel‘s senior youth group spent a spring evening around the campfire with musician Dan Nichols during his residence at the Reform synagogue. The teens created bookmarks for patients at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, and then enjoyed a barbeque, made s ‘mores and joined in songs led by Nichols. The activities took place on campgrounds located on the premises of the South Orange synagogue, which were created through a grant from the Foundation for Jewish Camping and The Partnership for Jewish Learning and Life. Nichols led the teens in an outdoor havdalah service to mark the end of Shabbat.

The Sharey Tefilo-Israel Synagogue Youth (STISY) holds monthly programs that incorporate social action, religious, recreational and cultural activities; membership is open to all Jewish teens in grades 9 through 12. TSTI, located at 432 Scotland Road in South Orange, serves member families from Maplewood, the Oranges, Livingston, Millburn, Short Hills and surrounding areas.
