NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 1, 2013 – On Tuesday, December 3, Newark, N.J.-based Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) will honor its “Heroes of Sandy” at the Annual Arts & Eats for Justice Gala. This year’s event will be held at the Newark Museum, located at 49 Washington St. in Newark, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Event proceeds are earmarked for VLJ’s comprehensive pro bono legal services.

At the Gala, VLJ will present its “Heroes of Sandy” awards to top law firms and businesses that have provided extensive legal services to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy through VLJ. Honorees include Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP; Duane Morris LLP; Gibbons P.C.; Giordano, Halleran & Ciesla, PC; Hewlett-Packard Company; Jackson Lewis LLP; McCarter & English LLP; Patton Boggs LLP; Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti LLP; and UBS Financial Services, Inc.

In addition, the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County, of which VLJ is the largest grantee, will present its yearly service awards. Robert Steinbaum, publisher of the New Jersey Law Journal, will receive the Douglas S. Eakeley Award, and the law firm of Connell Foley LLP will receive the Dickinson R. Debevoise Award.

Shortly after the storm hit, VLJ established its Disaster Legal Response Program (DLRP) to provide critical legal services to N.J. residents dealing with issues directly related to Sandy. DLRP features free clinics in Atlantic, Bergen, Hudson, Monmouth and Ocean Counties; extended representation; and a toll-free phone number.

This year’s event will mark the first time VLJ’s gala is being held at the Newark Museum, one of New Jersey’s intellectual landmarks, and one of its most charming. Guests will dine on the offerings of Frungillo Caterers, which operates many well-known event venues. The Star-Ledger and the New Jersey Law Journal are serving as the general media and legal media sponsors, respectively.
