Former Work Site of Famed Innovator Thomas Edison a Place for Work and Play

WEST ORANGE, N.J., June 19, 2019 – When looking for a new home, Debra Galant and Warren Levinson – a locally well-known creative pair – were immediately drawn to Edison Village in West Orange. Prism Capital Partners recently completed the industrial-to-residential redevelopment of the historic Thomas Edison Invention Factory and Commerce Center – once the work site of the famed innovator for which it was named.

Since moving to Edison Village in early April from their longtime home in Glen Ridge, the couple has quickly settled into their two-bedroom apartment in the completely reimagined factory building, known as the Residences at Edison Lofts. Semi-retired, Galant and Levinson continue to focus on a number of professional and creative pursuits, most often working from home.

The multi-talented Galant is a successful journalist, fiction writer and podcaster, who has turned her focus to painting, primarily using pastels as her medium. She also contributes frequently to New Jersey Monthly. The second bedroom in their apartment does double duty, serving as her art studio and a guest room. Levinson hosts and produces the popular travel podcast, “Get Outta Here!” for the Associated Press, utilizing the master closet as his “recording studio.”

“We often turn our seven-foot pine table into a ‘WeWork’ style space and then just clear it off when company is coming by,” said Galant. “The apartment provides a great space for us to create without feeling like we are bumping into one another. That was an initial concern coming from a larger home.”

The Edison Lofts building houses 300 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom residences, including 21 penthouse duplexes. Homes at Edison Lofts take advantage of existing architectural features of the historic factory, incorporating 14- to 16-foot ceiling heights and 10-foot replica replacement windows. “We chose a south-facing apartment, giving us brilliant light from the nearly floor-to-ceiling windows; it’s absolutely fabulous,” added Galant.

All residences feature designer kitchens with stainless steel appliances and luxury bathrooms.

Downsizing Proves “Fun Adventure”

For Galant and Levinson, their decision to downsize involved moving from their beloved 100+-year-old home, where they had resided for 30 years and raised their children, to a rental apartment. Visits to prospective apartment complexes were proving disappointing for the pair – that is, until they toured Edison Village.

“Warren and I fell in love with our apartment immediately, and the property has such a great urban feel to it,” said Galant, who had driven by Edison Village during various stages of its redevelopment and was curious to see the finished product. “Friends ask if downsizing has been a difficult transition, and I have to say it’s really been such a fun adventure.”

The couple are enjoying the host of modern amenities at Edison Village, in particular the expansive rooftop Sky Lounge, which boasts 360-degree unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline, a mix of seating, barbeque grills and fire pit. “The rooftop lounge is our favorite place to entertain,” said Galant. “We have had non-stop company since we moved here and are loving it. Friends and family want to check out our new place and the rooftop.”

The couple also frequents the property’s state-of-the-art fitness center and heated indoor pool. Galant swims regularly and uses the treadmills and Peloton bikes. “It couldn’t be easier to get to the gym,” she added.

Amenities also include theatre and media screening rooms, personal and bike storage, a dog-washing station, and concierge service as well as a self-serve café. For the ease of residents commuting to Manhattan, shuttle service will be available to and from the local train station.

Edison Village sits on 21 acres along Main Street in West Orange, in the heart of the township’s Downtown Redevelopment Area. Phase I has involved the total reconstruction of the historic factory complex as well as the development of 18,400 square feet of retail, a 630-space parking structure and The Mews at Edison Lofts, a boutique collection of 34 one- and two-bedroom homes with limited availability remaining.

The Edison Lofts leasing center is located at 33 Ashland Avenue and is open seven days per week. For more information, contact the leasing center at 973-327-9748 or Leasing@EdisonLofts.com. For property information visit EdisonLofts.com.
