Comprehensive Program Features Rigorous Set of Standards for Memory Care Neighborhood at Brick, N.J., SNF

Mark D. Pass, MD

BRICK, N.J. (May 29, 2024)Willow Springs Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center has introduced Journeys Memory Care, a person-centered, comprehensive memory care neighborhood model. Board-certified geriatrician Mark D. Pass, MD, is overseeing the new program at the Brick skilled nursing facility.

The Journeys Memory Care model was developed by Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports Willow Springs. Designed by memory care experts, the program features a standardized approach to care delivery, practice and management.

Willow Springs met the new care model’s rigorous set of standards and criteria, which includes benchmarks for the physical plant, evidence-based care delivery, caregiver experience and education, stage-specific life enrichment programming, and dining, among others. With Journeys, Willow Springs is taking its secure memory care neighborhood to the next level, according to Marquis’ Kate Bauer, regional director of market development.

Under the leadership of Dr. Pass, Willow Springs’ Journeys program supports residents’ physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs, enabling them to maintain the highest level of function and independence in a safe and secure environment. A dedicated team is trained and educated to communicate through validation, showing understanding, compassion and support as they join residents through the journey of each day.

Dr. Pass is board certified in geriatric medicine, palliative care and internal medicine. He possesses more than 20 years of medical experience and is affiliated with Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “Willow Springs is fortunate to have a geriatrician of Dr. Pass’ caliber leading this initiative,” said Bauer. “He is well regarded for his distinctive medical expertise and warm, unhurried manner.”

Training Emblematic of Whole-team Approach
Enhanced training for all Willow Springs Journeys staff members – from housekeeping and maintenance to culinary staff, and others who interact in any way with residents – includes a 12-part Dementia Basics Education series, which meets or exceeds state and federal regulations. The training incorporates experiential virtual dementia training to further educate team members on how to best provide care to those living with the disease. “Training for all memory care neighborhood staff is emblematic of the center’s whole-team approach to care,” noted Bauer.

Modern and bright, Willow Springs’ Journeys-designated neighborhood boasts a comfortable, home-like feel with dementia-friendly décor. The secure environment features separate living, dining and recreation space.  Memory care residents at Willow Springs benefit from psychology and psychiatry services, family support services, and rehabilitation and cognitive therapies. The robust life enrichment offering – featuring a range of therapeutic activities such as art, music, sensory activities, reminiscence therapy and intergenerational programming in indoor and outdoor settings – operates seven days per week.

As a further reflection of its capacity and commitment to progressive skilled nursing care, Willow Springs recently earned both a prestigious facility accreditation and program certification for its quality care and services from The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. After a rigorous, unannounced site review, Willow Springs received The Joint Commission’s Nursing Care Center Accreditation and its new Memory Care Certification for Nursing Care Centers, which is a collaboration with The Alzheimer’s Association.
