SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., March 19, 2014 – From body image to what is acceptable behavior, the media presents children with an array of images and messages that are often difficult for them to process. To help parents manage the impact of this messaging, Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI), sponsored by Jeff Lake Day Camp and Lake Bryn Mawr Camp, will host a free lecture by Dr. Robyn Silverman titled, “How Media Messaging Impacts our Kids and What We Can Do About It” on Tuesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. A child/teen development specialist, body image expert and award-winning writer, Dr. Silverman will share positive strategies that focus on children’s strengths and help develop character. This program is geared to parents of children through the teen years; for reservations please contact Jen Hubert at Jen@campbrynmawr.com. TSTI is located at 432 Scotland Road.
Dr. Silverman’s ground-breaking research at Tufts University on young women is the foundation for her book, Good Girls Don’t Get Fat: How Weight Obsession Is Messing Up Our Girls & How We Can Help Them Thrive Despite It [Harlequin Press]. She is also an expert contributor to Bully, a companion guidebook to the acclaimed film of the same name. She is a featured expert on many national television news and talk programs, and has been the body image and teen development expert for 18 books focused on middle school students.
