Reform Synagogue will Host Scholar Supper, Afternoon Hike with Jewish Teachings

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., April 17, 2014 – Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI) in South Orange will host Rabbi Jamie Korngold, “the adventure rabbi,” as its scholar-in-residence from Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4, 2014. The theme for the weekend is “Let the Wilderness Awaken Your Judaism,” and Rabbi Korngold will lead congregants and guests through explorations of how nature can enhance and revitalize Jewish practice. Korngold, the author of “God in the Wilderness,” is a Reform rabbi and founder and executive director of the Adventure Rabbi Program based in Boulder, Colo.
The public is invited to attend the following programs:
- Fri., May 2 – A special Israeli Oneg Shabbat to honor Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary lobby, followed by a Shabbat scholar service and supper starting at 6 p.m. Rabbi Korngold will briefly present teachings during the service; the discussion and a question-and-answer session will continue at the dinner immediately following. The cost for the dinner is $36 for non-members; advance reservations and payment are required by April 25. To reserve a seat, email Tracy Horwitz at thorwitz@tstinj.org.
- Sat., May 3 – Join the TSTI community for a Shabbat afternoon hike in the South Mountain Reservation starting at 3 p.m. Rabbi Korngold will share with hikers how nature can be a spiritual springboard to enhancing one’s Jewish experience. The hike will last about two hours at a moderate pace, rain or shine. A light snack and bottled water will be provided. Appropriate for adults; students ages 12 and up may accompany their parents. Spots are limited and advance reservations are required; pre-register with Tracy Horwitz by April 25 at thorwitz@tstinj.org. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the hike will conclude with an early outdoor Havdalah experience led by Rabbi Korngold and the TSTI clergy.
