South Orange Synagogue Will Host Film Screening, Jewish Life Cycle and Holiday Seminars as Part of Ongoing Education Series

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., Nov. 7, 2013 – Area residents are invited to Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel to participate in the Reform synagogue’s ongoing adult education series. All programs are open to the public:

  • Sun., Nov. 17 – The Canadian film, Barney’s Version (2010) examines the Canadian Jewish experience and its differences through the eyes of protagonist Barney Pamofsky, a hard-drinking writer and producer of a self-reflective soap opera. The 7 p.m. screening will be followed by an interactive discussion facilitated by Dr. Eric Goldman of Ergo Media, a film reviewer for the Jewish Standard newspaper. Fee is $5 for non-members; refreshments served.
  • Sun., Nov. 24 – Rabbi Ellie Miller leads the second in TSTI’s Back to Basics series with a free class on Chanukah at 9 a.m. The series provides background and history to make Jewish holidays, worship and ritual more meaningful.
  • Fri., Dec. 13 – As part of TSTI’s Shabbat Scholar program, Professor Paul Finkelman will discuss “Is the Supreme Court a Friend of the Jews?” at 6 p.m. during the evening service, and continue his lecture during a community dinner that follows. All are invited to attend the service; dinner is $36 for non-members and reservations can be made by contacting Tracy Horwitz at thorwitz@tstinj.org by Friday, December 6. Finkelman is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 30 books and 200 scholarly articles on a range of issues including those concerning Jews in America and religious symbols in public spaces. He is also the President William McKinley Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy, and Senior Fellow in the Government Law Center at Albany Law School.
  • Mon., Dec. 16 – Rabbi Daniel Cohen will share insights about “Entering a House of Mourning” at 7 p.m. During this free class, Rabbi Cohen will explain the why, what, where and how of paying a shiva call to Jewish mourners.
