Collingswood Nursing Assistant Among Health Facilities Association of Maryland Healthcare Hero Honorees
Recipients Recognized for Compassionate Quality Care, Tireless Work Ethic and Sacrifices During Pandemic
ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 15, 2020 – The Health Facilities Association of Maryland (HFAM) recently honored David Akoi, GNA, of Collingswood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Rockville during its “Celebrating Healthcare Heroes” ceremony. The geriatric nursing assistant was among 20 skilled nursing and assisted living professionals recognized for their contributions and sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the small, socially distanced awards event held at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve in Hanover, Md., each honoree received a trophy and a gift card. Recipients were nominated by their employers and chosen for heroic performance, including their demonstrated commitment to compassionate quality care, tireless work ethic, dedication to teamwork, and enthusiasm for leadership.
“While every healthcare worker truly deserves praise and recognition, we wanted to celebrate a handful of frontline heroes who have gone above and beyond to continue providing quality care to Marylanders in their most desperate hour of need,” said Joe DeMattos, HFAM president and CEO.
“A year ago, none of us could have imagined the challenges we have had to overcome,” he added. “Over the past six months, everyone who works in our long-term care and rehabilitation facilities has become the rugged pioneers in navigating what is now our new normal, and we must take the time to honor and thank them.” HFAM is the oldest and largest nationally affiliated long-term and post-acute care association in Maryland.
“We are thrilled for David, who is so deserving of recognition,” said Collingswood’s Jenelle Onyenemezu, administrator. “Our operational team is incredibly proud of him. From nurses, doctors and aids, to housekeepers, members of the dietary teams and other staff, everyone here has worked tirelessly and with steadfast dedication to the people in our care during an unprecedented time.”
Located at 299 Hurley Avenue, Collingswood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care. A $4.5 million renovation in the works and recognition as one of Maryland’s “Best Nursing Homes 2020” in Newsweek reflect enhancements in quality care and services underway at the 160-bed skilled nursing facility.
