SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., November 19, 2019 – Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI), located at 432 Scotland Road in South Orange, will host the following programs in December, which are open to the public.
- Tues., Dec. 3 & 17 – Join TSTI members at 2:00 p.m. for the twice-monthly Opening the Heart and Mind Meditation session. Participants learn how to practice different types of meditation, focusing on the breath, lovingkindness and awareness in a Jewish context. Facilitated by Beth Sandweiss; free and open to all. - Wed., Dec. 4 – Rabbi Daniel Cohen will lead a lunch & learn on “Israeli Mythology vs. Reality” at 12:15 p.m., co-sponsored by PrimeConnection, TSTI’s social group for older adults. Cohen will discuss some of the myths related to Israel and her neighbors and, in the process, help attendees gain a better understanding of the complexity of the Jewish State and the region. The class is free for TSTI members, $10 for guests; advance registration is required by November 27. - Fri., Dec. 6 – Steven Weissman, a former correspondent, editor and editorial board member at The New York Times, will be the featured guest at TSTI’s Shabbat, Scholar & Supper. Weissman will draw from his book, “The Chosen Wars: How Judaism Became an American Religion,” to present the dramatic history of how Judaism redefined itself in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. He is currently vice president for publications and communications at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and was awarded the Edward Weintal Prize in 2004 from Georgetown University for his reporting on the run-up to the Iraqi war.
The evening worship service at 6:00 p.m. is open to all, followed by the Shabbat dinner at 7:00 p.m. with Weissman. Cost for the dinner is $25 for TSTI members, $36 non-members until November 29.
