Company History and Overview

It all began with Patsy Inserra’s vision of creating a grocery store dedicated to serving local families and being a good neighbor. In 1954, he turned that dream into a reality when he opened the doors of Patsy’s in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

With the entrepreneurial guidance of the late Lawrence Inserra, the company expanded to 14 ShopRite stores by 1981. Today, under the direction of the Inserra family’s third and fourth generations and Ron Onorato, president and COO, that family and community focus continues at all 22 Inserra ShopRite stores. In New Jersey, its 17 ShopRites are located in Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties, and in New York, the company has 5 stores in Rockland County.

As one of the region’s largest employers, the family-owned chain provides full- and part-time positions to more than 4,800 associates. Inserra Supermarkets also owns and operates a PriceRite in Garfield, New Jersey.

Since Inserra Supermarkets’ earliest days, three main principles have formed the Inserra Creed:

Service – providing customers with a wide variety of merchandise in a pleasant and courteous environment.

Quality – providing customers with the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices within a clean, healthy and safe environment.

People – treating fellow associates fairly and providing them with the opportunity for growth by creating a satisfying and rewarding work environment.

These principles serve as the foundation of the company’s mission “to care deeply about people and help them to eat well and be happy.”

Inserra Supermarkets’ emphasis on the health and wellness of customers and associates goes hand in hand with its purpose-filled mission. At the heart of these efforts is its In-store Dietitian Program, which the company continues to expand.

On a daily basis, Inserra’s in-store dietitians provide shoppers with free nutrition counseling to help educate and inspire them to live well and make healthy, informed choices for themselves and their families. The dietitians also host a wide range of events, including cooking workshops, nutrition counseling sessions, weight management classes, recipe demos and product spotlights, among many others. In addition, Inserra Supermarkets often partners with local hospitals, health companies and nonprofits to provide complimentary screenings, such as cholesterol checks, glucose screenings and vascular assessments.

Community Outreach

Following in Patsy’s footsteps, each generation of the Inserra family has built upon his mission to lend a helping hand to those in need. Under the current leadership of Lawrence Inserra, Jr., chairman and CEO, Inserra Supermarkets gives back to the community through a vast range of charitable endeavors, and every June, Inserra Supermarkets hosts its Annual Golf Outing for the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund. Over the last thirty years, the Fund has donated millions of dollars to charities both large and small.

Inserra Supermarkets looks to make a real impact at the local and national levels with its continuous outreach and support of food pantries and other hunger-relief organizations, hospitals, public and private schools, and churches and temples, among many others. Those regularly include Table to Table, the Center for Food Action, Hackensack University Medical Center and its Tackle Kids Cancer organization, the MS Center at Holy Name Hospital and local chapters of the Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts of America to name just a few.

Inserra Supermarkets is an ardent supporter of cure-focused research for cancer and diabetes, including that of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center and the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). In 2016, Inserra Supermarkets raised $200,000 for the DRI, which utilized the funding to create the Lindsey Inserra-Hughes Immune Tolerance Seminar Series to advance immunology research for type 1 diabetes.

In addition, Inserra Supermarkets stores take an active role in ShopRite’s Partners In Caring, a community-based, hunger-fighting initiative. During National Hunger Awareness Month every September, Inserra ShopRites participate in Partners In Caring Help Bag Hunger events, which are aimed at raising hunger awareness within communities.

Leadership

Lawrence Inserra, Jr., Chairman and CEO, has decades of expertise having grown up in the business and is well-respected for his industry knowledge. In addition, he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Table to Table, the chairman of the Board of Governors at Hackensack University Medical Center and as a member of the Boards of Directors of Hillcrest Health Service System, Inc., among many others. Inserra earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business and economics from Lehigh University.

Ron Onorato, President and COO, possesses more than 35 years of industry experience. He joined Inserra Supermarkets in March of 2015. Previously, Onorato served as the SVP of operational initiatives of Ahold USA, an international group of supermarkets based throughout the United States and Europe, and as the president of the New York division of Stop & Shop. Onorato graduated from the University of Connecticut and the Wharton School of Business.

She has a range of leadership responsibilities, including overseeing the company’s In-store Dietitian Program, which continues to expand under her guidance. Active with numerous non-profits, Inserra is the Young Professional Chair of the Northeast Board of the Diabetes Research Institute and also serves as one of Table to Table’s first junior board members, among other leadership roles. She graduated from New York University with a Master of Science degree in social work.

Overview and History

Inserra Supermarkets will host its 31st Annual Golf Outing for the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund on Monday, June 19, to benefit charities large and small throughout the U.S. Since the Fund’s inception, it has donated more than $3 million to charity. Each year, contributions are earmarked for medical organizations as well as a range of other not-for-profits based on the suggestions and needs of associates of Inserra Supermarkets and its business partners.

This year, attendees will play a round of golf at one of four local courses – Manhattan Woods Golf Club, White Beeches County Club, Knickerbocker Country Club or Hackensack Golf Club. An evening reception at Seasons in Washington Township, N.J. will follow.

The annual event is held in honor of the late Carl Inserra, who passed away in 1987. He is the brother of Lawrence Inserra, Jr., chairman and CEO of Inserra Supermarkets; Marie Inserra; and Laura Inserra-Dupont; and is the father of Carl, Jr. The family-owned grocery chain owns and operates 22 ShopRites in New Jersey and New York and is well-known for its legacy of outreach and giving back to the communities.

Carl Inserra lived life to the fullest, and his greatest joy was the birth of his son, Carl, Jr. After a courageous two-year battle with leukemia, he succumbed to the dreaded disease. The support Carl Inserra received from his family, friends and associates gave the Inserra family the inspiration to establish this event to benefit others in his memory.

From its first gathering with just about 30 golfers, which Carl attended with his brother, the outing has evolved into a highly-anticipated annual event for hundreds of associates, friends and family members of the Inserra family. Through the years, the event grew to include two golf courses then three and four. In 2016, over 700 people attended the event, which raised more than $500,000.

Legacy of Giving to Local and National Charities

Every year, the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund allocates donations to numerous medical organizations for research, education and equipment as well as to ease the financial burden of patients and their families. The Fund also donates to many other worthy organizations.
